The St Joseph Altar Society is an organization made up of the women of the parish. All married and self-supporting single women are automatically a member. Any non-Catholic wife of a parishioner wishing to participate is welcome.
The primary duty of the Altar Society is care of the altars; purchases of bread, wine, candles, vestments, altar linens, flowers, and seasonal beautification of the Church.
The Quilt Party is our primary fund raiser. Membership is divided into 21 groups, with each providing a handmade quilt. Groups help each other with a social gathering of quilting & lunch. Anyone is welcome to participate, we have excellent teachers. Other activities are; providing concessions for the annual Parish Feather Party, providing the funeral meal for deceased parishioners’ families, Spring and Fall Mission Rummage Sales, Mother/Daughter Breakfast, meal for the Father/Son Breakfast, receptions for both the RCIA and Confirmation candidates, Spring and Fall Church cleanings, Lenten Soup Supper, sponsoring Red Cross Blood Drive, providing treats/gifts for the Spring View Manor residents’ birthdays, assist in sponsoring March For Life, seasonal Church decorating, and a committee welcoming new parishioners.
Membership is divided into six groups, called circles. Within each are two women, called the circle leader. They are responsible for obtaining food, donations, work schedules, etc., for the assigned functions of their circle.
The Society meets on the first Mondays of January, March, May, October, November, and December. All meetings are at 7:30 with exception of the March and December potluck dinners, which start at 6:30. The March “get acquainted” meeting welcomes the new members, along with a showing of our handmade quilts. The December meeting is our Christmas party. This year instead of a gift exchange, we sponsored a diaper party for the Wichita Children’s Home. Meetings open with prayer of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, followed by a business meeting conducted by the officers; the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Each year a new Vice-President and Secretary are elected, with nominations in October, and elections in November. New officer installations take place the following January, with the current Vice-President and Secretary moving into the President and Treasurer positions.
